How the USA is becoming the new China.

As the new regime takes further steps to adopt bigoted policies, in Washington a strange irony is playing out. While The Whitehouse rails against Chinese companies, which they see as an extension of the Chinese government, the US is becoming the very thing they hate most.

Sure, TikToc is either owned by or at the very least subservient to, the Chinese Government, and they likely have access to any data that the company has. However, does anyone really believe that Zuckerberg would refuse access to any data about, say, people with an interest in transgender issues, if someone came through the door with a search warrant? I expect the sad little man would be running cap in hand to obey the request and do so with bells on. So, how is this different to the Chinese?

I certainly don’t see a lot of difference if you happen to be on the wrong end of the equation. I think it’s more important than ever to be aware of the data we have stored about us online. While we can’t cover all the bases, we can do a clean up now and then, dumping out social media that doesn’t serve us, and from time to time adding data that diverts. For people who are not yet ‘out’, I always suggest having one specific email address for their LGBTQ life, preferably that can’t be traced back to them.
